I Bought a Pet Tomato
I bought a pet tomato and I tried to teach him tricks,
but he wasn't any good at catching balls or fetching sticks.
He could never catch a Frisbee,
and he wouldn't sit or speak,
though we practiced every afternoon and evening for a week.
He refused to shake or wave or crawl or beg or take a bow,
and I tried, but couldn't make him bark or get him to meow.
He was terrible at playing dead.
He couldn't jump a rope.
When he wouldn't do a single trick I simply gave up hope.
Though I liked my pet tomato,
I returned him with regret.
Boy,
I sure do hope this watermelon makes a better pet.

My Uncle Had an Ant Farm
My uncle had an ant farm
where he raised a lot of ants.
He taught a few to play guitar,
he taught a few to dance.
Another one, or maybe two,
he tutored on the ant kazoo.
He bought them little xylophones,
and teeny-tiny slide trombones,
submicroscopic saxophones
and itsy-bitsy baritones.
He trained a few to beat a drum,
and all the rest learned how to hum,
until at last they had a band
parading in the ant farm sand.
And yet no matter where you stood,
or where you put your ear,
those little ants were much too small
for anyone to hear.

My Dog is Not the Smartest Dog
My dog is not the smartest dog alive.
He seems to think that two and two is five.
He's sure Japan's the capital of France.
He says that submarines know how to dance.
My dog declares that tigers grow on trees.
He argues only antelopes eat cheese.
He tells me that he's twenty nine feet tall,
then adds that ants are good at basketball.
He claims to own a mansion on the moon;
a palace that he bought from a baboon.
He swears the sun is made of candy bars,
and says he's seen bananas play guitars.
It seems to me my dog is pretty dense.
He talks a lot, but doesn't make much sense.
Although I love my dog with all my heart,
I have to say, he isn't very smart.
